AND THE WINNERS ARE . . . .

Kelsey drew names for me this evening, each name written on the same color post-it note, folded the exact same way, with the name on the inside. She then stuck each post-it on the prize list next to the number, starting with prize #10. I am seeing the names for the first time as I type them below.
I can't begin to thank everyone who made a donation, whether it was a prize, a box of goodies, a monetary donation, or putting the word out about our project on your blog, reader loop or website. I was totally blown away by how huge this project grew. Monetary donations totaled $650.00 and my dining room is already crammed with boxes of stuff, with more on the way! Simply amazing. You have all touched me more deeply than words can express and I will never forget the love and enthusiasm that you gave along with your support.
I hope you will all continue to keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers, after all, they are the heart and soul, the true strength, behind these projects.

It's beginning to look a lot like Halloween!!

I love Halloween! I don't dress up or go to parties, but used to have Halloween parties for the girls and their friends until last year, complete with creepy snacks and drinks and a scary movie. It just didn't work out last year or this year for us to have a party. Maybe next year.
Here's a picture of Fred in his angel costume last year. Needless to say, he didn't have it on very long before he started shaking, trying to get it off! Here's also a picture of the pumpkins Kelsey and I carved this afternoon. The Superman "S" and the Elvis are designs we do every year. Lindsay always used to do the "S" but since she's away at school, we do it in her honor! We might end up carving a couple more tomorrow night, but our hands were too tired to do more.
My mom used to live on a dark, quiet dead-end street, and hardly had any trick or treaters, and then she moved into a retirement apartment, and has none, so she has always come out and sat with me to hand out candy. She's leaving Tuesday for a vacation in Switzerland, Italy, France and Germany (lucky mommy - her first trip abroad!), so it will just be Kelsey and I handing out candy this Tuesday evening.
I hope everyone has a fun, safe Halloween! Don't forget that I'll be drawing names in the troop raffle after trick or treat (sometime between 8 and 9 pm), so stay tuned for the announcement of winning names!

INFATUATION by Alison Kent

Okay, the kudos continue for Alison Kent! I picked this book up on Sunday at Waldenbooks in the mall. While standing deep in line to pay, I received a txt msg from my daughter who was in the Forever 21 dressing room (next door) and needed me to look at the dress she was trying on - immediately! Tim stood in line for me and paid for the book, totally unfazed by holding a romance in his rough, calloused man-hands. What a guy.

The last time he heard me talk about Alison was in a different bookstore, different mall, when I was looking for her CIG to Writing Erotic Romance. I was in the store by myself, and not being able to find it, asked a young male clerk to help me find it. This poor boy turned red as a beet, took me to the "Relationships/Self-Help" display and promptly left. Tim choose that moment to track me down, finding me intently searching the "relationship" shelves. I had to explain that there evidently had been a misunderstanding and no, I didn't think our 27 year marriage was in need of mending. I once again approached the clerk, who I swear cringed when he saw me coming, asking if he could look the book up. It was then clear that he didn't hear me say "writing" in the book title - he thought I was looking for the CIG to Erotic Romance, thus the relationship directive. Too funny!

Anyway, about INFATUATION, there are a handful of Blaze authors that I faithfully read. No, I'm not naming names. I've most likely discussed some of them previously, right here. The Blaze line has greatly improved and while I'm not and won't be, a subscriber again, I find myself picking them up more frequently than in the past. I never miss an Alison Kent book and am always confident in recommending them without hesitation. This book is no exception. It is excellent - I only wish it could have been about twice as long! A brief review for INFATUATION:

Rennie Bergen and Milla Page knew each other in college, when she was the girlfriend of his roommate. The two hit it off immediately, proving that opposites most definitely do attract. Rennie came from a hard-working middleclass family and Milla was the cream of the high society crop, as was her boyfriend. When Rennie and Milla had a secret, brief affair, the result was a myriad of hurt feelings and ultimately, changed lives.

Milla works at a dating service, as a reviewer of hot clubs and night spots. When Rennie's name comes up as a potential date from a "pool" of men's business cards in her office, Milla nervously decides to go see him at his car repair/body shop. Rennie is cool to Milla, almost cruel at times, but seeing how his feelings were the first to be stomped on in their earlier relationship, and because he is unaware of the significant changes in Milla's life, he's not a jerk for it. Milla is a small woman, of tempered steel it seems, as she is remarkably capable of taking care of herself. She gives back to Rennie as good as she takes.

The two embark on a new, adult relationship, shocked that the sexual intensity that previously existed is still there, possibly stronger than before. Just when it looks like they might be moving in the direction of a solid relationship, both find that the other has been keeping secrets and that their lives aren't at all what they seem.

Several brief flashbacks into the past help detail the previous relationship of Rennie and Milla. I typically don't like flashbacks, but these are very well done and go far to embellish the story, similar to the flashbacks in AK's FOUR MEN AND A LADY, also excellently done.

I highly recommend this book to all romance fans, whether regular readers of the Blaze line or not. And if you haven't picked up a Blaze lately? DO IT!

Thanks,

Laurie :)

Jamie Denton's latest, THE MATCHMAKER

Author Jamie Denton http://www.jamiedenton.net/ has a new book, THE MATCHMAKER, releasing October 31st. I have read many of Jamie's books, including UNDER THE COVERS, SEDUCED BY THE ENEMY, SLOW BURN, HOW TO BE A WICKED WOMAN, and HEATWAVE, and have enjoyed them all. There are a couple that I haven't read - one of which is SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY, and oh, what a hot cover on that one!
I've written a review for THE MATCHMAKER, and I'm hopeful that you'll read it, be teased into ordering this excellent book, and then spread the word about it!
Greer Garson Lomax is attempting to put her life back in order after a bungled FBI case that nearly killed her. It successfully destroyed her marriage to fellow agent, Ash Keller, and ended her stellar career with the FBI. She abandoned both to return to her hometown of Magnolia, North Carolina to heal, both body and soul. Barely maintaining a grip on her tortured sanity and physically exhausted, Greer buys and begins renovating a dilapidated old house into a bed and breakfast, and for some much-needed money and as a favor to the local sheriff, an old family friend, she agrees to take on the temporary position of deputy sheriff. When it looks as if a serial killer has targeted the sleepy town of Magnolia, flags are raised at FBI headquarters, and Ash soon arrives on the scene to check things out and to make sure that Greer is holding up okay. Seeing Ash after two years is a total shock to her system, and Greer isn’t certain that she can handle the stress of a serial killer and her estranged husband at the same time.
Ash wishes he could take back his actions of two years ago, as he was the one who put Greer in the dangerous position that almost cost her life. He hasn’t seen her in almost two years and is shocked at the gaunt, tormented, shell of a woman that Greer is now. He tries, and fails, to take over her investigation of the gruesome killings. Greer eventually concedes and accepts Ash’s assistance in catching “The Matchmaker,” the serial killer who apparently knows secrets from Greer’s long-deceased father’s past, and who may have now set his sights on her sister. Ash can only hope that Greer might also accept his still-strong love for her and give their marriage a second chance. But first they will have to catch the madman who is a deadly menace to the people of Magnolia; hopefully they can do so before he kills again. What they don’t know is that he has his sights set on Greer.
Jamie Denton has given readers an incredible treat with THE MATCHMAKER. Greer and Ash are tortured souls, both holding Ash responsible for their pain. Greer’s troubled relationships with her mother and sister are excellently written as neither of them can begin to understand the hell that she went through or why she has pretty much cut herself off from them and from life in general. Ash is eaten up with guilt over his failure to keep Greer safe from the lunatic two years before and is determined to be there for her this time. The secondary characters in this book are as real as the people in your own town, and their interaction with Greer and Ash is realistically written. The suspense is intense and spine-tingling, but not so gruesome as to be a turn-off.
Don’t miss this latest offering from Jamie Denton, especially if you like romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Two more weeks until the prize drawing!!

Time's running out! I will probably only do one more reminder next week about the Holiday for the Troops project. The response so far has truly been overwhelming. How it works - you send either items to be sent to the troops or checks, money orders or gift cards to be used to shop for the troops, I then shop and put together shipments and send them out to servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan. This link - http://lorifoster.com/author/militarytribute.htm - will take you to the Military Tribute page on Lori Foster's website where you will find a complete list of suggested items in the event you would like to do your own shopping for the troops. In return for your donation, your name will be entered in a raffle for some wonderful prizes. While I haven't decided on just how to put the prize packages together, the following list shows the incredible goodies that are being donated by various authors and others in the romance community:

Pretty amazing, huh? The drawing will be held and winners announced in the evening on October 31st (after my trick or treaters have stopped knocking, but no later than 9:00 p.m.) and I plan to mail the boxes during the second week of November to ensure delivery before the holidays. It is exciting every time we send shipments for the troops but the holiday boxes are especially fun to put together. If you are unable to send a donation of any kind, but would like to send cards, letters or drawings made by your children for inclusion in the boxes, they would be greatly appreciated! I am hopeful that if you have a blog you might mention this project and provide my information. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING POLITICAL ABOUT THIS PROJECT. It is simply a show of support for the men and women who serve our country. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks so much,
Laurie

A FOOL FOR FALL!

Yep, that's me! I absolutely love this time of year, except for the unseasonably cold temps today - doesn't look like we're going to make it out of the 30's. We even had a very brief little snow squall this afternoon. I love the beautiful leaves, the crisp nights, the smell of fire in the neighbors' chimnea. I have to admit that the first time I smelled their chimnea a couple of years ago, I thought my house was on fire - I was running all over the house, up and down stairs, looking for smoke. Now I pay no attention to it - someday my house will probably burn down around me!
We make several trips to the apple orchard and I'll be making a couple more batches of applesauce, we'll hit the pumpkin patch, and there's a craft festival called the Prairie Peddler that we never miss on the last weekend in September. This Sunday we are going to the Bob Evans Farm Festival at the original Bob Evans farm in Rio Grande, Ohio, depending on the weather. We went two years ago and had a great time. They have lots of great Bob Evans food, of course, but there are also huge tents with varied craftspeople, each and every one incredibly talented. Another thing that was fun to watch was tractor squaredancing. I know this sounds very cornball, and I guess it is, but it was great fun to watch. I don't know if I can even explain it except to say that there are eight (full sized) tractors involved, driven by four men and four women paired off as couples in a good sized arena; there's a caller and music and they promenade, do-si-do and swing around, just as if they were on foot. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen! I'll try to get a picture of them.
So what do you do to celebrate fall? Tell us about your festivals, decorations, parties and food!
Laurie

Alison Kent's BEYOND A SHADOW!

Most of you know how much I admire Alison Kent http://www.alisonkent.com/blog/, her riotous sense of humor and her work. There's never a dull moment at her blog; it's one of the first stops I make in my online ventures every day. November and December will bring the release of two new AK books - INFATUATION and BEYOND A SHADOW, respectively. I'll no doubt talk about INFATUATION in a later post, but this one belongs to Ezra.

BEYOND A SHADOW is Ezra Moore's story. Finally. This is the one that most of Alison's loyal readers have been (patiently?) waiting for. Trust me, it is worth the wait. I'm just one of the AK fans who have anticipated each and every book in the SG-5 series, and I know I'm not alone in that I dread that dark day when I read the final page of the very last one.

Ezra Moore made a major impact, albeit in a minor role, in several of the SG-5 books, his actions and motives questionable at times, but he has practically screamed for a woman and a story of his own. Thank heavens Alison heard him! This is my review for BEYOND A SHADOW:

When Ezra Moore shows up in the quiet little harbor town of Comfort Bay, it is under the guise of a Caribbean school teacher on hiatus, and he quickly takes on the temporary job of handyman at the local B&B. The job couldn’t have turned up at a more convenient time. While Ezra appears to have stopped there for rest and relaxation, he is on a deadly mission, one that could be his last, and he soon regrets that it will be played out in the friendly and peaceful Comfort Bay. Ezra is immediately drawn to Alexa Counsel, local school teacher and close friend of the family who owns the B&B, and keeping her safe quickly becomes one of his biggest concerns.
Alexa Counsel is suspicious of Ezra Moore and his dark, dangerous looks, from the moment she first sets eyes on him. She questions his school teacher alibi, and can’t quite picture him in front of a classroom full of children, most likely because he dresses and carries himself like a mercenary, always aware of everyone and everything around him. Alexa tries to ignore the attraction to Ezra that tugs at her very core, warming her with feelings and desires that she hasn’t felt since before her divorce a few years prior. Soon the two of them are lovers; each finding soothing comfort in the arms of the other. But neither Alexa nor the townspeople could begin to imagine or predict the danger that was headed their way.
I think that I have used every descriptive possible in reviewing and talking about Alison Kent’s books. Intelligent, witty, deep, edgy, gritty, savvy and intriguing are just a few, and all remain applicable when talking about BEYOND A SHADOW. When Ezra first appeared several SG-5 books back, he appeared very dangerous, deadly even, definitely unsalvageable. Alison has been softening her readers up to Ezra so that now, when he finally has her telling his story, they are guaranteed to love him and will continue to think about him after the book has been closed. The secondary characters and their loves, families and relationships can only be considered a wonderful bonus to the story of Ezra and Alexa, as is the appearance of previous SG-5 heroes.
BEYOND A SHADOW releases in December, I can think of no better time to treat yourself to an excellent book!! Here's a link to Amazon if you'd like to skip on over and pre-order: http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Shadow-Alison-Kent/dp/0758211147/sr=1-2/qid=1159986405/ref=sr_1_2/104-2563313-8011166?ie=UTF8&s=books

Thanks!
